Table Tennis Tables : A Buying Guide

Table tennis, ping-pong, call it what you will, this is a great game for all ages and it helps to keep you fit at the same time!

Buying a new table tennis table can be a significant investment, so make sure that you choose carefully.

WHAT TYPE OF TABLE?Do you want to use your table indoors or outdoors? Full size or half size?

INDOOR TABLESFor indoor tables, look for one which folds away after use. In the average family home, space is restricted, so check the size of the space where you want to store the table.

You will find indoor tables which come in one piece, or in two pieces. The latter can make storage easier, or the table halves can have a dual use, perhaps as a homework desk for the kids.

Naturally, an indoor table can be taken outside but beware. Leaving such a table out in the rain or sun can and will do damage.

OUTDOOR TABLESLook for outdoor table which are designed to be left out year round. These will be more expensive than indoor tables, but give you more scope. Most outside tables are full size and will fold in the centre. Many will have wheels for ease of movement. Although these tables are suitable for outdoor use, investing in a waterproof cover will extend the life of your table.

These tables, and some indoor folding versions, can be half-folded, giving a one person practice backboard.

WHAT SIZE TO BUY?Table tennis tables can be found in full size, intermediate size and small size. Which one you choose depends on available storage space and who is going to play. Serious players will, of course, need a full size table. Younger children can made do with an intermediate or small sized table.

WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED?Your table should come complete with a net, two or sometimes four bats and some table tennis balls. Check to make sure these are supplied, or you will be disappointed when the table arrives without equipment.

BUYING ON EBAYNew and second-hand table tennis tables can be found on eBay year round. Check the seller descriptions carefully. In particular, watch for those which are for collection only are they close to where you live? Others may say carriage extra but not specify the amount. Dont get caught out look for offers which give full details and details of the carriage cost. Table tennis tables are large items and, unless you collect, will be delivered by courier service, so someone will need to be at home to receive the order.

Happy playing!
